Moonvalley and Asteria create first AI model using ‘ethically sourced’ data

The Marey model aims to usher in a new era of responsible AI use for filmmakers

Moonvalley and Asteria have announced an intention to build a clean foundational AI model.

Calling on experience gained at companies including DeepMind, Google and Microsoft, generative AI provider Moonvalley”s team of specialists have spent a year in collaboration with AI film and animation studio, Asteria, to create what they describe as the “industry’s first clean foundational AI model.”

Marey, named after early cinema pioneer, Étienne-Jules Marey, will be trained exclusively on “ethically sourced data owned by the company,” aiming to usher in a new era of responsible and transparent AI use, upholding high standards of data integrity and creative freedom.

The announcement follows concerns voiced by many throughout the media and entertainment business and comes a day after the UK government announced a consultation ahead of regulatory changes to accommodate the rapidly evolving technology.

Bryn Mooser, CEO and co-founder of Asteria, said, “AI is a powerful tool for the future of Hollywood, but it’s not usable until a clean model is built that’s not trained on other people’s scrapped data. Our foundational AI model Marey will be the first model that can ethically and legally be used across entertainment and media. At Asteria, we are pioneering the use of AI in a way that not only preserves the humanity and integrity in filmmaking, but will create more opportunities for artists.”

“We partnered with Asteria because they are the leading generative AI film & animation studio in Hollywood, and they know better than anyone how these tools can be used at scale,” added Moonvalley’s CEO and co-founder, Naeem Talukdar. “Together, we are building an AI company that Hollywood can trust. Marey will not only be the best video model, but it will be the only one that can be used inside Hollywood.”

The Marey model is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2025.
