FA considers scrapping 3pm blackout to screen closed-off matches

Sky and BT could screen all Premier League matches for free but block their signal in pubs

The FA will likely forego the Saturday 3pm blackout if Premier League matches are forced to take place behind closed doors over coronavirus concerns.

Following yesterday’s meeting between UK broadcasters, government officials and sports bodies, upcoming Premier League matches are expected to be played in empty stadiums.

The Times reported that talks are underway to allow the screening of 3pm games, traditionally not shown on TV.

“It makes sense to remove the blackout but what we don’t want to do is create a new problem by just moving those crowds from the stadiums to the pubs,” a source told The Times.

The report suggested that Sky and BT could screen all Premier League matches for free but block their signal in pubs.
