Lisa Nandy MP has been appointed as Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport.
The appointment was announced on 5th July as new Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer formed his first cabinet. Elected as MP for Wigan in 2010, Nandy said she was “thrilled” to take over as the head of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), following the Labour Party’s General Election win.
Most recently serving as Shadow Foreign Secretary, the Manchester-born MP has previously held a number of Shadow Cabinet roles, and was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the late Dame Tessa Jowell, when she was Shadow Olympics Minister.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Nandy said: “From rugby league to Royal Opera, our cultural and sporting heritage runs through our towns, villages and cities and is one of our country’s greatest assets. It is an unbelievable privilege to take on the role of Secretary of State [at DCMS]. The hard work begins today.”
