Meet the… marketing communications manager

Ilana Tchenko, marketing communications manager at TAG Video Systems, advises anyone interested in working in the media industry to embrace continuous learning and be curious about new technologies

Talk us through an average day in your role.

Every day is a bit different, which is what I love about it. I might begin by analysing social media performance, and then move on to writing email copy. Later, I could be assessing campaign data and planning upcoming activities. Of course, I always make time to connect with our PR agency and media partners. This variety keeps me on my toes and ensures I’m always learning and growing.

How did you get started in the media industry?

I’ve always been drawn to the media industry’s ability to inform, entertain, and connect people. It’s a field where I can combine my passion for communication with my marketing expertise to make a meaningful impact. My role at TAG Video Systems allows me to use my skills to contribute to the success of a company at the forefront of media technology.

What training did you have before entering the industry?

My communications and labour studies degree provided a strong foundation, which I’ve built upon through online courses, self-learning, and hands-on experience at Johnson Controls. This has equipped me with essential skills for marketing in the media industry, including communication, content creation, marketing automation, and data analysis.

Why do you enjoy working in the industry?

I thrive in the fast-paced, innovative environment of the media industry, where there is a constant evolution of technology. I’m passionate about using my marketing skills to tell compelling stories, connect with audiences, and contribute to the success of our company. I particularly enjoy the collaborative nature of the industry, where I can work with talented individuals across different departments to achieve shared goals.

What piece of advice would you offer someone looking to explore a role similar to yours?

Embrace continuous learning, be curious about new technologies, and cultivate a passion for communication and storytelling. Don’t be afraid to network and reach out to professionals in the field for advice and inspiration. The media industry rewards those who are adaptable, creative, and driven to make a difference.
