Figures from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) Yearbook have shown that 49.9 per cent per cent of the UK population subscribe to SVoD services.
The report found that streaming services helped boost the video sector by 9.5 per cent in 2019, to reach £2.61 billion in value.
Digital video was revealed to be the fastest-growing entertainment segment in 2019, up £372.9 million on 2018.
ERA also noted that while the number of physical outlets selling entertainment declined in 2019, there were still 10,000 physical outlets selling DVDs. Furthermore there were 9,460 video titles available for download, but 122,659 available on DVD.
“Physical entertainment still amounted to a £1.4 billion market in 2019,” said ERA CEO Kim Bayley. “It is certainly down, but it is far bigger than many appreciate and still offers benefits in terms of gifting, collectability and permanence which streaming cannot match.”
