France is the third-largest video entertainment market in Europe, according to Futuresource Consulting.
The country’s video entertainment consumer spend is expected to exceed €7 billion this year as Netflix drives SVoD growth.
Futuresource’s report found that SVoD stacking is still relatively uncommon in France, with less than 40 per cent of SVoD households taking more than one service.
It added that new SVoD services from the likes of Apple and Disney will likely frustrate consumers as programming choices become increasingly fragmented.
Offerings that aggregate multiple services and provide a seamless user experience “will rise to the top,” Futuresource predicted.
“Despite the closure of CanalPlay, SVoD has started to take off in France driven by Netflix’s fantastic performance,” said Futuresource market analyst Tristan Veale.
“From 5 million subscribers at the end of 2018, representing half the market, we are expecting their subscriber base to grow further in 2019.”
