Sustainability: a core theme at IBC2024

Sustainability continues to be a major talking point in the media technology industry, and IBC2024 will reflect those discussions as part of its People and Purpose pillar

This year’s IBC Show features three key pillars: Transformative Technology, Shifting Business Models, and People and Purpose.

According to IBC CEO Mike Crimp, People and Purpose aims to enable “the entire IBC community to play an active role in positive change, including attracting and retaining the next generation of talent and fostering skills development, improving sustainability, and promoting diversity, equality and inclusion”.

Sustainability continues to be a major talking point in the media technology industry. As broadcasters and production companies add ESG clauses to their RFP documents, a company that isn’t able to provide details is going to find it tough to find new business.

But there’s also a worry that some companies aren’t confident enough to put their green credentials into the public domain. “It may be that they’re on their [sustainability] journey but are nervous to talk about what they are doing because a) they’re worried that they’ll be accused of greenwashing, and b) they’re concerned that despite being on their journey, they are aware they’re not at the end of it,” says Lisa Collins, co-founder of the Media Tech Sustainability Series (MTSS).

Her colleague and MTSS co-founder Barbara Lange suggests that the industry has gone through a peak of hype and is now experiencing a dip. “But, I do believe that those organisations who actively integrate sustainability into their strategies will be more successful in the long-term,” she adds.

MTSS is hosting a series of real-world case studies as part of IBC’s Partner Programme, with input from the likes of Ross Video CEO David Ross, EVS CEO Serge van Herck, and Edgio’s Group VP, EMEA, Emma Whitmore. The event is free to attend with more details available here.
