London to take control for Sky News’ inauguration coverage

Coverage of the swearing-in of the 47th President of the United States will be controlled from the Sky News gallery in Osterley, London, with all communications controlled remotely

As part of its coverage of the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States, Sky News will broadcast reaction from the Middle East, Ukraine, Russia, Westminster, China and around the world.

The coverage will be controlled from the Sky News gallery in Osterley, London, with all communications controlled remotely.

All cameras will be operated locally and fed back to London via satellite, the broadcaster tells TVBEurope. It will also take multiple feeds from the US broadcasters’ pool, with everything mixed on-site in London.

Sky News’ coverage of the inauguration will start at 3pm GMT, hosted by Yalda Hakim and Mark Austin from Washington DC.

Audiences will be able to watch the swearing-in via Sky News’ TV channel, app and website.

Sky News employed remote production for its coverage of November’s US election. While it had presenters based in Washington, its main gallery was based in the UK, a first for the broadcaster.

“Not to blow our trumpet too much about the whole remote production part of it but Sky News and Sky Sports have been leaders in remote production for many years now,” Niel Finlay, senior director at Sky News told TVBEurope at the time.

“We’re lucky being top-end broadcasters, we’ve already got that infrastructure in place. It’s just one of the facts, when you run a remote production, there is going to be slight latency in there, but it’s nothing that we aren’t used to dealing with.”
