EFL agrees deal to put 8K cameras in football stadia

Immersive entertainment company Cosm has installed several 8K cameras around each match stadium to capture all angles, with the game then “stitched” together to create a unique wide-angle effect that recreates being in the ground itself

The English Football League has agreed a deal that will see six upcoming matches screened in 8K at two immersive entertainment venues.

The arrangement has been made possible by CBS – the international broadcast partner for the EFL –partnering with Cosm, an immersive experience company.

The matches will be screened at Cosm’s venues in Los Angeles and Dallas.

As part of the deal, Cosm has installed several discreet 8K cameras around each match stadium to capture all angles, with no interruption to the regular production output. This is then “stitched” together to create a unique wide-angle effect that recreates being in the ground itself, the EFL said.

The immersive-experience technology simulates the experience of audiences attending the stadium, when they are simply in a specially built auditorium.

The partnership will kick off on Tuesday 3rd December with Wrexham’s match against Barnsley. Other games that are part of the deal include:

  • Sheffield United v Burnley – Thursday 26 December
  • Wrexham v Birmingham City – Thursday 23 January
  • Coventry City v Leeds United – Saturday 8 February
  • Huddersfield Town v Wrexham – Tuesday 4 March

Cosm already has a deal in place with the Premier League and its US broadcast partner NBC Sports to show matches at its venues.
