Italy’s RAI begins DVB-T2 broadcasts

Rai Storia, Rai Scuola and Rai Radio 2 Visual are all available via the new multiplex

Italian broadcaster RAI has finally begun broadcasting some TV channels via the new DVB-T2 HEVC standard.

RAI has postponed its move to DVB-T2 multiple times due to concerns not enough homes had the correct equipment installed. It was first mooted in June 2022. In July it announced plans to begin the broadcasts this month.

Rai Storia, Rai Scuola and Rai Radio 2 Visual are all available via the new multiplex. Rai 1 HD, Rai 2 HD and Rai 3 HD are being broadcast via DVB-T2 as well as the previous DVB-T version.

According to Adolfo Urso, Italy’s enterprise minister, the move is a “significant step towards the future of digital communication and the national television system, starting the transition to the new digital terrestrial with DVB-T2 transmission standard.

“This will not only raise the quality of broadcasts but also represents a concrete commitment from the government for a technologically advanced and connected country.”
