Pinewood Group has announced further expansion of Shepperton Studios, along with a long-term contract with Netflix to double the size of its existing production hub at the iconic Surrey studios.
The expansion brings 1 million square foot of new production accommodation to the Pinewood-owned premises, with 17 sound stages and new jobs across the organisation.
Construction work is underway and occupation is expected to commence in 2023. Once complete, Shepperton Studios will be one of the largest film and TV studios in the world.
Netflix created its production hub at Shepperton in 2019. The new contract is said to reinforce the company’s commitment to the UK film industry.
The plans are the latest in a streak of new studio and expansion announcements in the UK, as the demand for production space increases with the boom in content creation.
“We are thrilled to be going ahead with the next phase of expansion at Shepperton Studios and we’re especially pleased to be strengthening our partnership with Netflix,” said Pinewood Group chairman Paul Golding. “Their commitment to expand at Shepperton is an endorsement of our operational expertise and enables us to continue our investment into this great studio.”
“We are delighted to announce the expansion of our production presence in the UK,” added Anna Mallett, Netflix VP physical production UK and EMEA. “The new contract with Shepperton highlights our commitment to investing in the UK creative industry and will provide a wealth of opportunities and production jobs, from entry level to heads of department. We’re excited to work with some of the best storytellers in the business to create amazing new films and series for our members.”
