Telefónica has introduced a 5G broadcasting innovation at the Mobile World Congress which allows real-time news coverage with high-quality video.
The low-latency, high-bandwidth 5G mobile network has production software installed at the edge, close to where the cameras are, allowing the producer to remotely manage different inputs while connected to a fibre optic link.
Eliminating the need to send mobile units, the solution enables immediate coverage of breaking news as the reporter only needs to take a TV camera connected by 5G to any location. The producer can then remotely access that signal in real time and generate a video signal for a news programme.
Ericsson provided the network equipment, Idronia Multimedia Solutions designed the technical production side, and the mobile devices used for the 5G connectivity are Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.
